Trumpcare, the Trade Gap, A Day Without Women, and More
March 10, 2017
The Roosevelt Rundown is an email series featuring the Roosevelt Institute’s top 5 stories of the week.
1. The Truth About Trumpcare
At The Nation, Roosevelt Fellow Mike Konczal writes that while the GOP has essentially attacked the Affordable Care Act from the left, arguing that its premiums and deductibles are too high, their new plan is actually more regressive, keeping most of Obamacare in place but weakening it in ways that will satisfy no one.
2. The Deep State Disconnect on Trade
Roosevelt Fellow Todd Tucker writes at Politico that the latest edition of the U.S. Trade Representative’s report to Congress demonstrates the stark contrast between Donald Trump’s populist trade rhetoric and bureaucratic Washington’s continued preference for the status quo of previous administrations.
3. Making Progress on Campus
The city of Binghamton is expanding the use of the blue-light phone boxes used to connect students directly to campus police, a community safety initiative championed by Roosevelt @ Binghamton. And the members of Roosevelt @ Amherst proposed five steps to make the campus more accessible to people with disabilities, including a more inclusive admissions process and expanded support services.
4. The Day After a Day Without Women
Roosevelt Fellow Andrea Flynn and Program Manager Rakeen Mabud took to Facebook Live to discuss Wednesday’s strike, how the GOP’s health care proposal will affect women, and more. Watch the video here.
5. The Benefits of Healthy Competition
On our blog, Research Associate John Sturm does some back-of-the-envelope calculations to show how concentration and lack of competition in the U.S. health care sector costs the economy a quarter of a million jobs.
